Nice open access (free) review paper on how skeletal muscle communicates and directly facilitates brain health.
Paper covers how muscles increase:
1. Mood
2. Memory
3. Executive Function.
4. Neurogenesis
5. Angiogenesis
6. Synaptogensis and more.
More specifically it covered the evidence for how:
Muscle-derived molecules (e.g., cathepsin B, FNDC5/irisin, Interleukin-6) play key roles in brain functions including learning, memory, and mood
Myokines trigger signaling mechanisms that favor synapse plasticity in the brain.
Metabolic disorders and skeletal muscle disease may impair brain function.
Physical exercise may boost muscle-brain communication, cognition and mood.
Summary quote from the conclusion:
“it is conceivable that proper muscle-to-brain signaling is an essential physiological mechanism that, once disrupted, may contribute to defective endocrine communication, and predispose individuals for brain disease. 1st paper published out of our non-profit @hhpfoundation showing the feasibility of a VERY short breathing intervention in kids learning remotely during COVID.
This stuff is very easy to execute and surprisingly impactful for mental health - especially in this vulnerable population.
Huge ups to Tanya for all the hard work on this one.

from @_brianmackenzie Kids, teenagers, people respond well to consistently applied tools that aid in balancing the system out in a world that is a pressure cooker in the opposite direction.
Here’s the biggest takeaway that I learned about this project. If you’re a parent, give your kids the opportunity to learn. Not the learning by memorizing the mostly unusable information they are being horse-fed in school. Learning by understanding that the path we currently have them on is not sustainable. Anxiety, depression, fitness and health are all byproducts of this paradigm. The level at which parents seem to care about grades more than they do about the health of their own children is fascinating to say the least. Alas, it would only match the very same way that we behave in the “grown up” world where 7 billion children run around with the mask of an adult.
*Never trade the playful child for the emotional one.
